A San Antonio police officer is recovering after being shot during a tense standoff that unfolded in a Stone Oak neighborhood on Friday. The incident began as a domestic violence call at a home on Red Hawk Ridge near Hardy Oak Boulevard, which escalated into an hours-long SWAT operation.
According to police officials, the suspect, believed to be the estranged husband of the victim, arrived at the residence around noon. He forced his way inside and fatally shot his wife before barricading himself in a room. San Antonio Police Chief William McManus stated that the suspect “shot his way through a door” to enter the home, then took refuge inside.
As officers arrived, the suspect opened fire, wounding a seven-year veteran officer. The officer was struck below the vest and above the belt but was fortunate that no vital organs were hit. He was quickly transported to Brooke Army Medical Center, where he underwent surgery. His injuries are not considered life-threatening, and his name has not been released.
In response, law enforcement officers, including SWAT teams, surrounded the residence. Negotiators attempted to communicate with the suspect, while tactical teams prepared to breach the home. Around 3 p.m., officers fired tear gas into the house in an effort to force the suspect out. An armored SWAT vehicle was used to shatter an upstairs window, creating an entry point for officers.
Shortly after, officers entered the home and found the suspect dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. During the incident, police rescued two young children who were inside the residence. Thankfully, neither child was injured.
The suspect’s identity has not been publicly released, but authorities are investigating reports that he may have gang affiliations. The investigation remains ongoing, and police continue to review evidence to understand the full circumstances of this tragic event.
