We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Sara Ryung Clement, a remarkable artist, educator, and vital member of the University of Minnesota Twin Cities community. Sara’s sudden departure leaves a profound void in the worlds of theater, academia, and our hearts. As a distinguished costume designer and professor, Sara dedicated her life to fostering creativity, nurturing students, and enriching the artistic landscape with her extraordinary talent.
Throughout her illustrious career, Sara brought her unique vision and impeccable craftsmanship to numerous productions, both on stage and behind the scenes. Her scenic and costume designs have graced productions such as the University of Minnesota’s own “Steel Magnolias” (2013), “Washer/Dryer” (2015), and “Kentucky” (2016), showcasing her ability to craft compelling visual narratives. Beyond her work with the university, Sara’s impressive portfolio included designing for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival’s “Cambodian Rock Band” (2019) and Theater Mu’s innovative live film-theater production of “Today is My Birthday” (2021), which was supported by EWP. Her work consistently highlighted Asian American and Pacific Islander stories, elevating diverse voices and perspectives in theater, and inspiring audiences and artists alike.
Sara was not only an outstanding designer but also a compassionate mentor and colleague. Her kindness, humility, intellect, and brilliance made her a beloved presence in our community. Her collaborative spirit and unwavering dedication to her craft made every project she touched better. Those who worked with her will forever cherish her artistry and the light she brought into our lives.
